Mr. Jeffrey Kotecki, Principal
Dear West Side Parents, Caregivers and Students,
On behalf of the staff at West Side STEM Magnet Middle School, I am happy to welcome you to the 2018-19 school year! This fall we are embarking on a new exciting adventure as we open our doors as a STEM Magnet School. We hope you can feel the anticipation and excitement of everyone who has worked to transform West Side. With an academic focus on STEM, we see the future coming into focus. We are looking forward to building a productive partnership with you to ensure our children can achieve their highest potential. In order to be successful in school, our children need support from both home and school. Your guidance and support is essential for your child’s learning. Please ensure that he/she:
Attends school daily and arrives on time, ready for the day’s learning experience. The late bell is at 8:05 am.
Completes all homework assignments given by teachers
Reads daily to develop a love for reading and to improve literacy skills
Shares school experiences with you so that you are aware of his/her school life
Informs you if he/she needs additional support in any area or subject
Remembers physical education clothes and sneakers on gym days
Remembers to practice band and strings instrument daily
Takes part in after school sports and clubs
Reports any issues that affect them in getting a safe education
At West Side STEM we take pride in being respectful, responsible and safe. We speak to each other in a respectful manner at all times and in all areas of the building. The West Side Way is a set of expectations that all students follow. I am attaching a copy of the West Side Way so that you and your child can review them together. It is very important that you and your child are fully informed regarding standards related to appropriate behavior for a safe and productive school year. If you have any questions about the rules and expectations, please feel free to contact me. In addition you can review the Middle School Parent Handbook on www.grotonschools.org.
Attendance is essential for academic success. Students are required to be in school for at least a half day for it to count as a full day. Connecticut State Law defines a “truant” child as one who has 4 unexcused absences from school in a month or 10 unexcused absences in a school year. Absences 1-9 are considered excused when the student’s parent/guardian approves such absences, regardless of reason with written documentation. Emails are not acceptable forms of written documentation.
Please feel free to contact me or stop by the school with concerns or questions. My office is always open to parents. An appointment is never required.
The staff and I at West Side STEM Magnet School feel privileged to welcome you to be part of this school family. We thank you for your support and look forward to an exciting year!
