Dear West Side Parents, Caregivers and Students,

On behalf of the staff at West Side STEM Magnet Middle School, I am happy to welcome you to the 2019-20 school year! This fall we entered our second year as a STEM Magnet School.  Next year both West Side and Cutler Middle School students will join together to become the Groton Middle School.   The new Groton Middle School will be a STEAM Magnet Middle School, with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.    We hope you can feel the anticipation and excitement of everyone who has worked to make this happen.  Our academic focus will be on STEAM; we are looking forward to building a productive partnership with you this year to ensure all children can achieve their highest potential.  As we complete our last year here at West Side, we have expectations for all students to be successful in school, our children need support from both home and school. Your guidance and support is essential for your child’s learning. Please ensure that he/she:

·         Attends school daily and arrives on time, ready for the day’s learning experience.  The late bell is at 8:05 am.

·         Completes all homework assignments given by teachers

·         Reads daily to improve literacy skills and develop a love for reading

·         Shares school experiences with you so that you are aware of his/her school life

·         Informs you if he/she needs additional support in any area or subject

·         Remembers physical education clothes and sneakers on gym days

·         Remembers to practice band and strings instrument daily

·         Takes part in after school sports and clubs

·         Reports any issues that affect them in getting a safe education

At West Side STEM we take pride in fostering a respectful, responsible and safe community.   We speak to each other in a respectful manner at all times and in all areas of the building. The West Side Way is a set of expectations that all students are expected to following. A copy of the West Side Way can be found on our school webpage so that you and your child can review them together.  It is very important that you and your child are fully informed regarding standards related to appropriate behavior for a safe and productive school year. If you have any questions about the rules and expectations, please feel free to contact me.   In addition, you can review the Middle School Parent Handbook on

Attendance is essential for academic success.  Students are required to be in school for at least a half day for it to count as a full day.  Connecticut State Law defines a “truant” child as one who has 4 unexcused absences from school in a month or 10 unexcused absences in a school year.  Absences 1-9 are considered excused when the student’s parent/guardian approves such absences, regardless of reason with written documentation. Please note, emails are not acceptable forms of written documentation.

Please feel free to contact me or stop by the school with concerns or questions.  My office is always open to parents. I’m always open to establishing positive relationships that benefits our students.

West Side STEM Magnet School feels privileged to welcome you to be part of our school family.  We thank you for your support and look forward to an exciting year!
