Principal's Message

Dear Thames River Magnet School Families,

Welcome back to a VERY NEW School Year and one of my most exciting school years yet! We are all about to embark on something magnificent as we come together as a new school community in a beautiful new building with new routines, procedures, and traditions! I cannot wait to start this new learning experience with your child and with you. Mrs. Allen, Mrs. Bibby, Teachers, and Staff have been working hard preparing everything to be ready in our classrooms, developing lessons, and preparing for our two outstanding magnet themes – Environmental and Marine Science.

We have a tremendous year planned with Project Oceanology (Project O) and New England Science and Sailing (NESS). TRMS has partnered with both organizations to create hands-on learning experiences. With the help of Project O, TRMS has obtained a Bay Watershed Education and Training (B-Wet) grant that allows for the development of student driven outdoor learning spaces. We will be creating our outdoor learning spaces throughout the year with our Grade 5 students as the ambassadors of the project. Ms. Rotner, our Magnet Coordinator, will be working with TRMS on a weekly basis to help support our Enrichment Wednesdays, Recycling initiatives, and with our NESS AmeriCorps members. All students will experience weekly themed related STEM lessons and hands on learning activities. We’re are also excited that we’ve established a partnership with the Marine Science Magnet High School. Please visit the TRMS website regularly for additional information about our themes as well as updates from the school. In addition, please take time every night to check your child’s folder as various important flyers, permission slips, and notes will be coming home.

Academically, in addition to the dynamic curriculum and lessons that your child’s teacher will be creating, our incredible Literacy and Math team will be supporting students during Reader’s Workshop and Math Workshop. They will be also meeting with small groups during the WIN (What I Need) blocks.  We will continue to use Seesaw for Preschool through Grade 2 and Google Classroom for Grades 3 through 5. Your child will be reintroduced to these Learning Management Systems (LMS) by their classroom teacher. Homework may also be posted on these systems. To help develop and meet our student’s social, emotional, and behavioral needs, TRMS has a School Social Worker, Behavior Tutor, MFLC support and a School Based Health Center Counselor.

We are still working to finalize details for the start of the year but our main goal is to make sure that we are all on this journey together as a supportive, cohesive learning community that we are thrilled to belong to. We are looking forward to building a strong home school connection where we work together as a team. Please do not hesitate to outreach to me, Mrs. Allen, Mrs. Bibby and your child’s classroom teacher with any questions you have.

Thank you in advance for your commitment, support, and dedication in making this first year of Thames River Magnet School the best!

 Sincerely,
Jamie Giordano
