Principal's Message

Dear Thames River Magnet School Families,

Welcome back to Thames River Magnet School! I am thrilled to start another amazing year of learning inside and outside the classroom. We have a brand-new outdoor learning space that expanded over the summer as we added a greenhouse and pavilion space. The two outdoor classroom structures are surrounded by our garden beds. I can’t wait for you to see it and for students to continue to have hands-on lessons in these spaces that complement our magnet themes – Environmental and Marine Science.

We continue to partner with Project Oceanology and New England Science and Sailing (NESS) as well as we have recently added the Mystic Aquarium as a partner. I will be surprising students soon with what we will be working on with the Aquarium. Ms. Rotner, our Magnet Coordinator, will also help to expand our Recycling and Composting systems.  I am excited to announce that Olivia Latimer will be returning as one of our NESS AmeriCorps members. We are eager to meet the other member that will join the TRMS team this year. The members will be joining in October as they receive extensive training in September.

I want to take a moment to introduce Amber Monahan, who will be an Assistant Principal.  She is a familiar face to TRMS as she was a TRMS Special Education Teacher last year. We also welcome in to the TRMS team: Megan Bishop as our Social Worker; Cheryl Elci as a Special Education Teacher; and Rina Shah as the Grades 2-3 Academy Teacher.

Great news! We will be able to provide free breakfast and free lunch to all students again this year. With that being said, it is still very important to complete the Free and Reduced Lunch Form that is in this folder. The information helps our district in providing the necessary funding to support our students. Thank you in advance for completing it. Additionally, please visit the TRMS website regularly as I will continue to post school updates as well as various announcements. We will be sending some paper copies home but will be trying to converse paper, so I will be emailing and posting much more.

Our supportive PTO Board met last week and started to plan the year. If you would like to come to the first meeting, it will be September 20 at 5:00pm in the TRMS Library. Two additional dates to note: Summer Reading Logs are due September 9 and Open House is September 13 from 5:30-6:30pm.

Last year was an incredible first year and I am looking forward to another year where we are focusing upon our TRMS mission for all to feel a sense of belonging as it takes us all to make our school a supportive, learning community! Thank you for your support, dedication, and commitment in making this another outstanding year at Thames River Magnet School!

 Sincerely,
Jamie Giordano
