Transition Academy
Building Confidence and Independence
Groton Public Schools Transition Academy provides instruction to students who have achieved all of their credits required for high school graduation but who have not achieved their secondary transition goals and objectives.
Instruction is provided in employment, post-secondary education and training, and independent living skills. Academic instruction is embedded in secondary transition activities such as budget development, menu planning, cooking, and arts and crafts.
Students also learn employment skills while working as a small group at job sites in the community, with supervision and coaching provided by the program staff. A focus on recreation and leisure activities is also embedded in the program with a focus on developing age-appropriate social skills and leisure activities.
Students are considered eligible for the program based on a referral from the case manager in grade 12. This is followed by a review of progress on the secondary transition goals and objectives and an in-person observation of the student by the Transition Academy teacher and program administrator.
The program only accepts students who reside within the Groton Public School district boundaries or based on enrollment.
Students receive bus transportation to and from the program and access to job sites and community locations. The GPS Transition Academy is handicap accessible.
