Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports

Groton Public Schools is committed to supporting the whole student by providing equitable access to resources and opportunities, including differentiated interventions. This work directly ties to Goal #1, Accelerate Academic Achievement of our strategic plan

What is MTSS?

MTSS is a proactive and preventative framework that organizes and delivers support to ALL students. It is not a specific program or curriculum. It's about making sure every child gets what they need to succeed.

MTSS typically involves THREE TIERS OF SUPPORT, each offering a different level of intensity.  Families are part of this process at all tiers.

TIER 3- (typically 1-5%)  Intensive support to a small percentage of students who require more individualized and comprehensive interventions.

TIER 2- (typically 10-15%) Targeted interventions for students who need more support than what Tier 1 alone provides. These are often delivered in small groups and focus on specific skills.

TIER 1- High-quality curriculum and differentiated instruction for all students in the general education classroom.

What is your role as a family member/caretaker?
  • Communicate with the School: Stay in regular contact with your child's teachers and school staff.
  • Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to ask about your child's progress, the interventions they are receiving, or any concerns you may have.
  • Share Information: Provide insights into your child's strengths, challenges, and any relevant information from home.
  • Support Learning at Home: Reinforce school efforts by supporting learning and positive behaviors at home.
  • Attend Meetings: Participate in meetings where your child's progress and support plans are discussed.

How Does MTSS Benefit Your Child?
  • Early Identification: Potential learning or behavioral challenges are identified early, allowing for timely support.
  • Tailored Support: Your child receives interventions that are specifically designed to meet their unique needs.
  • Data-Driven Decisions: Interventions are based on evidence and data, ensuring they are effective.
  • Prevention, Not Just Reaction: MTSS aims to prevent problems from becoming larger issues.
  • Collaborative Approach: Teachers, specialists, and families work together to support your child's success.
