IB Middle Years Programme

The MYP is for all Groton students, grades 6 through 10. It helps students build strong academic skills while encouraging them to think independently, make real-world connections, and become caring, global citizens.It gives students the tools they need to succeed academically and in life.  It encourages students to learn how to live the attributes of the IB Learner Profile: Inquiring, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced, Reflective.


Who is it for?

The MYP is ideal for students who:

  • Are naturally curious and enjoy learning in different ways.

  • Want to understand why what they learn matters.

  • Are interested in making a positive impact on their community and the world.

  • Enjoy a challenging and supportive learning environment.


What does the MYP include?

The MYP covers eight subject groups, ensuring students get a well-rounded education:

  1. Language and Literature (usually the student’s main language)

  2. Language Acquisition (a second language)

  3. Individuals and Societies (like history, geography, or social studies)

  4. Sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, etc.)

  5. Mathematics

  6. Arts (visual arts, music, drama, etc.)

  7. Physical and Health Education

  8. Design (technology, innovation, and problem-solving)

These subjects are connected through real-world topics and global themes, helping students see how learning applies outside the classroom.


What makes the MYP different?

  • Concept-Based Learning: Students explore big ideas that go beyond memorizing facts.

  • Inquiry-Based Learning: Students ask questions, investigate, and reflect on what they discover.

  • Global Contexts: Lessons connect to real-life situations around the world.

  • Approaches to Learning (ATL): Students build skills like organization, communication, teamwork, and thinking—skills that help in school and in life.


The Personal Project

In the final year of the MYP, students complete a Personal Project—a major piece of work where they choose a topic they're passionate about, research it, and create something meaningful. It’s a chance to show independence, creativity, and all the skills they’ve developed during the programme.

Examples:

  • Writing and illustrating a children’s book

  • Creating a fitness plan and app

  • Organizing a community garden

  • Designing a fashion line or building a website
