Welcome to music at S.B. Butler Elementary School! We are very lucky to have a wide variety of musical choices at S.B. Butler. Click on the programs below to learn more about the music programs offered in our school.
Band is a fun and rewarding learning experience for any hard working student. Fourth and fifth graders can learn to play a band instrument with Mr. Schneider. Students may choose the flute, clarinet, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, or percussion.
Beginning students meet once a week for a 30 minute small group lesson. Later in the year they will join with the second year band students for an additional 45 minute full band rehearsal. Students are expected to practice on their own at home, 20 minutes a day, five days a week.
There are several performance opportunities for the band throughout the year, depending on the student's ability level:
Orchestra is another way for children to become involved in music at S.B. Butler School. String instruction begins in 4th grade and continues through 5th grade. Students may choose to play the Violin, Viola, Cello, or String Bass. This program is offered throughout the district.
Beginning members of the S.B. Butler Orchestra will receive one, 30-minute small group lesson and one large group lesson each week in the beginning of the year. The large group lessons are with other beginning string students who play the same instrument. Once the students have mastered the basic skills on their instrument they will have one, 30-minute small group lesson each week, and one, 45-minute orchestra rehearsal that will include all of the members of the orchestra together! This typically begins in late January. Beginning string students will participate in the spring concert.
Returning string students, those in their 2nd or 3rd year of string instruction, begin the school year with one, 30-minute lesson per week and one, 45-minute orchestra rehearsal. The Orchestra will participate in many performances throughout the year.
