The Connecticut Department of Public Health will be providing a tiered system to assist leaders and define the decision-making approach should partial or full class-cancellation become necessary:
- The district will follow the CT DPH guidance for community and school-based indicators to assist in the decision making process regarding a potential partial or full class cancellation.
- The district will distribute and post the CT DPH guidance to the district and schools’ websites when it becomes available and Ledge Light Health District if the student tests positive for COVID-19
Included in the LEA reopening plan written protocols for containment and immediate response if an individual has signs or symptoms of COVID-19, there is a known exposure, or a member of the school community has a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19A:
- The school nurse will be the point person to receive and safeguard information about students and staff who are sick with COVID-19 related symptoms or who had known contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19 and have also had contact with the school population.
- The school nurse will use The COVID-19 Fever/Symptoms Flowsheet
COVID-19 19 Fever symptoms flow sheet
- Decision Tree for People with COVID-19 Symptoms in Youth, Student, and Child Care Programs to all parents and staff
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/symptoms-testing/symptoms.html
- While at school, students or staff who have a temperature above 100 (non-touch forehead thermometer) that does not resolve within 10 minutes and at least one of the symptoms of COVID-19 or no temperature but at least two of the symptoms of COVID-19:
- The school nurse and school health aide will don the appropriate PPE.
- The student’s parents will be contacted to pick the child up from school.
- The school nurse will refer the student to his/her medical practitioner.
- The student will be isolated in a supervised location until he/she goes home.
- The child will be excluded from school until he/she has a negative COVID-19 test or a note from his/her physician.
- School nurses will contact the principal if the student meets the criteria to be sent home from school.
- School nurse will contact the nursing supervisor and Ledge Light Health District if the student tests positive for COVID-19
Each school will develop a Response Team consisting of: principal, school nurse, custodian, guidance counselor/school psychologist, teacher representative, office staff member, IT specialist to coordinate the school’s response.
Identify an “isolation room” (besides the health office) to accommodate students who exhibit symptoms consistent with COVID-19 until a parent or guardian arrives:
- Distribute the “Overview of COVID-19 Symptoms” adapted from the CDC as prepared by the VNA of SECT
- Distribute the “Unusual Symptoms of COVID-19” adapted from the CDC as prepared by the VNA of SECT
- Distribute the “Health Office Guidelines Flow Chart - During COVID-19” to all staff to educate them on when to send a child to the nurse’s office or isolation room.
- Teachers will send students directly to the Isolation Room if they have symptoms of COVID-19. Teachers will determine if the child requires an escort to the Isolation Room.
- The Isolation Room will be located as close as possible to the nurse’s office and have a monitor available to supervise the student at all times. Recommend a trained paraprofessional. A cot will be available if possible, in addition to chairs for the student and monitor, a garbage can with a liner, tissues, water, hand sanitizer or a sink with soap and water, paper towels, Walkie Talkie or phone for the monitor to contact the nurse immediately if needed.
- Multiple students can be in the isolation room at the same time with social distancing guidelines in place. The children will be required to wear a mask if they are able to. The isolation room will have a sign in sheet to monitor who has been in the room. The isolation room will be deep cleaned after each use.
- The Monitor will wear a disposable gown (one per day), face mask, face shield, and gloves.
- The school nurse will wear the same PPE when entering the Isolation Room.
Students will be dismissed from the office or via an exterior door if available.
Create a consistent policy for dismissal of students or staff who exhibit symptoms of COVID-19 and must be dismissed from school:
- Make a referral to the policy committee to develop a consistent policy for dismissal of students and staff who exhibit symptoms of COVID-19 and must be dismissed from school using the following resources for guidance:
- The school nurse will use The COVID-19 Fever/Symptoms Flowsheet to determine if students or staff who exhibit symptoms should be sent home from school.
