NEW: SCREEN AND STAY GUIDANCE
November 10 Letter from Superintendent Austin
The new Screen and Stay guidance has been developed by the Department of Public Health and the State Department of Education to provide temporary relief for families and school districts impacted by the frequent quarantine of unvaccinated or partially vaccinated K-12 students and staff due to COVID-19 exposures experienced in the school setting. This guidance applies to in-person learning and is not intended to apply to other settings such as athletics, extracurricular activities or other activities that occur outside the normal school day. Screen and Stay does not apply to Prek and Preschool students.
For the remainder of the Fall 2021 semester, students or staff who are exposed to a COVID-19 case in the school setting and remain asymptomatic may continue with in-person learning or work, provided the exposure involved individuals who were wearing masks indoors or in a supervised setting outdoors regardless of masking, during the entire exposure period.
Guidance developed by DPH and CSDE for Screen and Stay can be found here. Appendices 1-3 outline the steps to take if a student or staff member is unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, is identified as a close contact, and is asymptomatic.
Ledge Light Health District has communicated their support of this new guidance based on the findings of several studies that suggest that the transmission of COVID-19 among students in the school setting is relatively infrequent, and that infections among contacts of cases in school settings are very low, particularly due to our strong and consistent mitigation strategies in the school setting.
The district is in the process of facilitating vaccine clinics for students ages 5-11. An additional clinic for staff and students ages 12-18 will be available on December 3 at Fitch High School.
The Screen and Stay protocol will be effective on Monday, November 15. Additional information on Screen and Stay is posted on the District website, www.grotonschools.org.
