I so appreciate your dedication and hard work during these unprecedented times. At the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Groton Public Schools’ faculty and staff came together as we instantly had to shift to full remote learning; something never done before. We worked as a team, collaborated on all elements of schooling, including curriculum, instruction, technology, and health, safety and social emotional learning.
Now, nearly a year later, we all look forward to having students back in the classrooms for more in-person learning, and with the state prioritizing the vaccine for educators, this will be actualized very soon. The GPS Phased-In Reopening Committee is working together to create a district plan that will lay out a phased-in approach to bring back students four days a week, ensuring that health and safety protocols are in place in the best way we can. We continue to work closely with Steve Mansfield, Ledge Light Health District Director, with health updates from the region.
As a teacher for many years, an elementary principal, assistant superintendent, and now superintendent, health and safety are my first priority. Educators and school support staff need to be applauded for following the health protocols which have kept everyone safe in schools. I realize what a heavy lift this past year has been for everyone in our school community including teachers, staff, students, and parents. As we move forward, we need to remember those lessons learned and silver linings as we bring our students back to school and re-engage them in learning in-person. Parents and teachers are looking forward to reduced screen time.
A survey is being sent out asking you to make a commitment to in-person learning or full remote learning for the remainder of the year. Parents may choose for their children to be 4 days “in-person” OR parents can choose for their children to be “fully remote.” There is no hybrid 2 day in-person option any longer. Please refer to the GPS strategic phased-in chart above.
Please see the list of mitigating health and safety protocols for in-person learning.
Please fill out the Reopening Survey indicating your commitment to 4 day In-Person learning or Full Remote Learning so school administrators will have the information they need to make sure we are opening the schools with care and safety.
Thank you for your continued support,
Superintendent of Schools
